Fundraising to honour my mom
Please consider supporting me in my journey help in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. As some of you may know, my beautiful, funny, smart mom was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's several years ago. Seeing her and our family go through this extremely difficult journey into loss has been some of the hardest work of my life. Although dementia is something that touches almost all families at some point, I never expected it to begin to take my mother from me at such a young age. I'm not usually one to get very personal on the internet, but I think that the value of spreading awareness and any efforts that can be put towards funding such an important organization outweigh any discomfort I have about sharing something very personal and painful for me online. The supports provided by the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba have been extremely valuable to us in the past few years as we learned about the progression of the disease and the ways in which we can assist our mom.
Inspired by my mom, I have committed to participating in the Walk for Alzheimer's to support families living with dementia in our community. Any funds I raise will go towards the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba to provide support programs and services for families affected by dementia, while also funding research to help find a cure.
If you are wondering how there can be a Walk for Alzheimers in the midst of a pandemic and social distancing, the Walk has adapted this year. I will be going for a hike with my sister and we will film it and post it on social media. Participants have been asked to take part with any kind of physical activity, so we may see what else we can incorporate on the days leading up to the big walk on May 31st.
Please consider donating, but if you do not feel comfortable or are unable to right now, it also helps to simply send encouragement or to have a look at the Alzheimer's Society website and learn something about this disease that has changed the landscape of my whole life and touches so many families worldwide. Thank you for reading!
